For business owners

Put your company's surplus cash to work for you and your family.

  • Buy-sell funding and succession planning
  • The Immediate Financing Arrangement (IFA)
  • Overhead, key person and critical illness coverage
  • Two-will planning to reduce probate tax
See how it works
The risk

You've worked hard for what you have. Have you planned for what happens next?

Without a plan, taxes, probate and unpaid debts can take a big share of what you built, at the worst possible time for your family.

No will, or the wrong will

Without a will, Ontario law decides who gets what, and a court decides who raises your children. Business owners may also need a second will to cut probate tax.

Savings that lose to tax

Interest on savings is taxed every year. Inside a corporation, investment income is taxed at about 50% and can shrink your small business tax rate.

What if you can't work?

Six months off for illness or injury. The mortgage, the bills and, for owners, the payroll keep coming. How would you pay them?

Your goals

Six things a good estate plan should do

A plan isn't just a will. How many of these can you tick today?

1

Pay debts, final costs and taxes efficiently

So your family doesn't have to sell assets, or the business, to pay the tax bill.

2

Give your spouse their own income

Money that doesn't depend on the business being sold or doing well.

3

Treat your children fairly

If one child takes over the business, life insurance can give the others a fair share in cash.

4

Plan your succession while you're alive

Decide who takes over, when and at what price, with a funded buy-sell agreement.

5

Keep the company healthy, and don't pass on debt

Cash to keep the business running, so your family doesn't inherit its debts.

6

Build wealth outside the business

A protected retirement plan of your own, so your retirement doesn't depend on selling.

The strategy

Put your surplus cash to work in corporately owned whole life insurance

1

Move idle cash

Your company pays the premiums with low-taxed corporate dollars.

2

Grow it tax-sheltered

The cash value grows without yearly tax, and is there for emergencies.

3

Use it in retirement

Borrow against the policy for income, without cashing it in.

4

Pass it on tax-free

Most of the death benefit can reach your family tax-free through the capital dividend account.

A real example

Same money, two paths

Melissa, 37, owns a profitable company that can set aside $42,000 a year for 10 years. Both paths pay her an extra $23,000 a year after tax from age 65 to 85.

The difference is what her family receives.
